As a prep, he posted bests of 4:20 in the 1600 and 9:17 in the 3200.

His collegiate career in cross country and track was at Iowa State University where he was three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team.  He graduated in 2015 with degrees in mathematics and finance.

His first two years out of college as a professional runner, he trained at altitude in Flagstaff focusing on the half marathon and marathon distances.  Tyler qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon and finished 36th in Los Angeles.  From 2015-2017 he ran eight marathons, achieving a best of 2:16:52 at Pittsburgh in May 2017.  He also won the USATF 50k Championships in the spring of 2017.
